Claude
Claude Gave You One Free Limit Reset. Here's Where It Is, Before 23 October.
Every Claude Pro, Max and Team subscriber got one free usage limit reset with Opus 5.5. Where the button sits, what pressing it did to my account, the right day to use it, the two expiry dates, and what Opus 5.5 changed in plain words.
If you pay for Claude on a Pro, Max or Team plan, Anthropic has put one free reset of your usage limit in your account. It's a single button that takes your limit back to zero, it's already sitting in Settings, then Usage, and it expires on 22 or 23 October depending on whose clock you read.
You only get one and it can't be undone, so it pays to pick your moment. This page covers where the button is, what happened when I pressed mine, the day I'd save it for, and what the model it shipped with changes.
What is the free Claude limit reset?
It came out on 22 September with Claude Opus 5.5. In the launch post, Anthropic says it's "providing subscription users a rate limit reset, which you can now save and use whenever you choose." Its developer account spelled out who gets it.
You don't need to be anywhere near your limit to use it. Anthropic's help page on limit resets adds the details that matter. A reset refills your limits immediately, your weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time, and once you've confirmed it there's no going back.
Where is the reset button in Claude?
Open Claude in a browser or the desktop app and go to Settings, then Usage. Scroll past your usage bars and you'll find a panel called Resets with a Reset for free button on the right. That's the screenshot at the top of this page, taken on my own account on 28 September, with my weekly limit at 99% and the Fable limit fully used.
If you'd rather skip the menus, the short link clau.de/reset opens the same usage page on the web.
Click the button and Claude asks you to confirm.

That dialog tells you three things at once: both limits go back to full, your week still rolls over on its normal day, and this is the only one you get.
What happened when I pressed it
I pressed Reset for free and the whole page went back to zero. The current session bar emptied, the weekly limit dropped from 99% to 0%, and the Fable limit, which had been completely used up, came back to 0% as well.

The Resets panel at the bottom now says "No resets right now", which is the proof it really is one per account. And the weekly bar kept its old reset time, so I got a full allowance back without my week moving.
But Anthropic's help page words it differently. It says a reset restores either the five-hour limit or the weekly limit, while my dialog said both and both went to zero. Your own dialog tells you which one you're getting, so read it before you confirm.
When should you actually use it?
Not today, unless today is the day the limit is about to stop real work.
The reset is worth the most when you're halfway through something that matters, your weekly limit is nearly gone, and your week still has days left before it rolls over. If your week resets in a few hours anyway, pressing it buys you very little, because a full allowance was coming back regardless.
So notice which day of your week tends to run out first, and keep the reset for that one. If 22 October gets close and that day never came, use it on whatever you're working on rather than letting it expire.
When does the Claude reset expire?
Two dates are floating around and they're both right. The ClaudeDevs post says "apply it any time until Oct 22." The dialog on my account, which shows Singapore time, says it expires on 23 October. Anthropic's post runs on US time, so I read the difference as the same deadline in two time zones. Anthropic hasn't published an exact cut-off hour, so I wouldn't leave it to the last day either way.
A few rules from the help page that are easy to miss:
- Not on mobile or in the terminal. The button isn't in the Claude mobile apps or in Claude Code in your terminal, so use the web or the desktop app.
- It can't be undone. Once you confirm, the reset is spent.
- Cancelling or downgrading loses it. If you cancel or downgrade before you use the reset, it's gone.
- It doesn't touch money. It won't refund overage you've already been billed for, and it doesn't change your usage credit balance.
The reset wasn't the only gift that fortnight. Anthropic also handed out up to $250 in Claude Code credit for cloud sessions, which I wrote up here, but that one had to be claimed by 7 October and the window has closed.
What does Opus 5.5 change, in plain words?
The reset panel says it's there to give you "extra wiggle room to explore Opus 5.5", so it's worth knowing what that model is. ClaudeDevs says Opus 5.5 is now the default for paid plans, so unless you've changed your model, it's likely what you've been using since 22 September. Three of the changes are worth knowing about.
It works at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work. That's Anthropic's own claim in the launch post, and per Anthropic's pricing page Fable 5.1 costs two and a half times as much per token, so you're getting close to top-tier output from the cheaper model.
It answers faster. Anthropic says Opus 5.5 writes its output more than 30% faster than Opus 5, which you feel most on long replies and long documents.
Your limits stretch further. It costs less to run, so per ClaudeDevs your 5-hour and weekly limits go about 25% further on it. In the same thread they said 5-hour session limits in Claude Code went up 20% on launch day too.
FAQ
Who gets the free Claude limit reset?
Every Claude Pro, Max and Team subscriber gets one reset per account, in Settings, then Usage, under a panel called Resets.
Does the Claude limit reset refill the 5-hour limit or the weekly limit?
On my Max account, the confirmation dialog said both the 5-hour and weekly limits go back to full, and both dropped to 0%. Anthropic's help page describes it as restoring either one, so check what your own dialog says before you confirm.
Can I use the Claude reset on my phone or in Claude Code?
No. The reset button isn't available in the Claude mobile apps or in Claude Code in the terminal. Open Claude in a web browser or the desktop app to use it.
What is the last day to use the free Claude limit reset?
Anthropic's announcement says until 22 October 2026, and the dialog on an account in Singapore time reads 23 October. Anthropic hasn't given an exact cut-off hour, so use it before 22 October to be safe.
Does the Claude reset change when my weekly limit resets?
No. Your weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time after you use it. The reset refills your allowance without moving your week.
The one thing I'd do
Open your usage page today, check the button is there, and then close it without pressing anything. Make a note of the day your week usually runs out, and save the reset for that afternoon.
